Overview
The University of Alberta in Edmonton is one of the top teaching and research universities in Canada, with an international reputation for excellence across the humanities, sciences, creative arts, business, engineering and health sciences..
Augustana Campus
On July 1, 2004, two of Alberta's oldest educational institutions joined forces: Augustana University College in Camrose—formerly the Camrose Lutheran College—merged with the University of Alberta. Today, while the college's heritage is still recognizable in the campus buildings and liberal arts and sciences curriculum, the benefits of this historic merger have breathed new life into Augustana, the university, the Camrose area and the entire province.

Admission Requirements
The following requirements must be fulfilled to get admitted to the University of Alberta:
- International students are considered on a case-by-case basis. There can be some additional requirements, depending on the program you are applying to.
- Students are required to submit their original transcripts from their last attended academic institutions. If they are not in English, then submit the translated copies of the same along with the originals.
- Should provide the certificate issued by the International Qualifications Assessment Service (IQAS) that compares educational credentials from other countries to educational standards in Canada.
- Applicants must be 18 years old at the time of the beginning of the course.
- You need to submit your English language proficiency test scores if you are coming from a non-English speaking country.
Please note: If you are not a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident of Canada, you must obtain a valid study permit before you come to Canada.
Opportunities
Career Centre
The Career Centre is your source for career and employment information and expertise at the University of Alberta. We strive to empower U of A students, postdoctoral fellows, and alumni to develop the skills, knowledge, experiences, and connections they need to confidently manage their careers. We use a planned happenstance approach as careers can be affected by unplanned events. This approach involves taking action and trying new things – even if you are unsure of the outcome.
When exploring career options, we encourage you to keep the following in mind:
- Engage deliberately and intentionally in a variety of activities.
- Follow your curiosities and interests.
- Get involved in life beyond academics.
Accomodation
Housing
There are many housing options for international students, both on campus and around Edmonton. Here are resources for finding a place to live, including temporary accommodations when you first arrive.
Temporary Accommodation
Students are responsible for arranging accommodation in a hostel or hotel from their date of arrival until their residence move-in date.
The temporary accommodations listed below are just a sample of many accommodation options within Edmonton that are relatively close to the North Campus. Students are welcome to search online for other options that meet their needs and budget. It is best to book accommodation with an Edmonton address instead of an address in Leduc or Nisku which are close to the airport, but outside of the city of Edmonton.
- Campus Tower Suite Hotel
- Comfort Inn and Suites Downtown
- Holiday Inn Express Downtown
- Hostelling International
- Ramada by Wyndham Edmonton South
- Travelodge by Wyndham Edmonton South
- University of Alberta Guest Accommodation
- Varscona Hotel
Temporary accommodation should be arranged prior to your arrival in Edmonton so that you have a place to stay until you can move into your university residence.
On-Campus Residence
Living on campus is a great option, and international students who prefer living in residence do so because of the convenient location. The organized program of activities helps students build new friendships and offers academic support. You can arrange housing before arriving in Edmonton.
Off-Campus Housing
- The Elev site offers information on off-campus accommodations and price ranges in Edmonton.
Tips for looking for accommodation:
- Arrive two weeks to a month before classes to arrange off-campus housing.
- Reserve at least one week for temporary accommodation before you arrive so that you will have a place to stay while you arrange permanent housing.
- Visit the accommodation in person and meet prospective roommates - If you cannot see the accommodation in person, ask the landlord to provide you with pictures of each room.
- Review rental agreement details. Staff cannot enter into any housing agreement on your behalf.
- We recommend that international students and visitors get tenant insurance. This coverage can protect against losses to your personal property, including clothes, jewelry, luggage, computers, furniture, and electronics. Tenant insurance provides coverage for your belongings against common risks such as theft, fire, and loss due to water damage. Your landlord is not responsible for reimbursing you for damage to your personal property, even if that damage is through no fault of yours.
Additional Items to Note:
- Prices vary depending on size, location, etc., and may include the cost of utilities (electricity, heat, water, etc.) in the rent.
- If utilities (heat, electricity, water, etc.) are not included in the rental costs, ask what the average cost is in the winter, which is likely to be more expensive.
- Sharing accommodations can be less expensive than renting an apartment alone.
- Find out about laundry facilities inside the building and nearby.
- Learn about public transportation and accessibility for your needs.
Student Support
Student Service
The Student Service Centre is here to help you make the most of your university journey. We provide information and access to services to support your academic, financial, mental, and physical well-being. If we can’t answer your questions, we’ll connect you with someone who can.
