Overview

Established in 1966 in Dunedin, Otago Polytechnic is a proud leader in hands-on, career-focused education. It has over 150 programmes and some of the best student achievement and satisfaction results in New Zealand, not to mention resounding endorsements from employers. There are three campuses throughout New Zealand; Dunedin, Central Otago and Auckland.

Admission Requirements

The following requirements must be fulfilled to get admitted to the Otago Polytechnic:

International students are considered on a case-by-case basis. There can be some additional requirements, depending on the program you are applying to.
Students are required to submit their original transcripts from their last attended academic institutions. If they are not in English, then submit the translated copies of the same along with the originals.
Applicants must be 18 years old at the time of the beginning of the course.
You need to submit your English language proficiency test scores if you are coming from a non-English speaking country.

Please note: If you are not a New Zealand citizen or a permanent resident of New Zealand, you must obtain a valid study permit before you come to New Zealand.

But choose wisely because part of having a great experience here is being happy in your home life too. Auckland is a big city with lots of different living options; inner-city excitement or tranquil bush settings; apartment-living or a shared flat.

As well as location, there are different types of accommodation for you to think about. Look at all the options available and choose what best suits your personal needs and budget. Here are some of the most popular options:

Apartments

There are many popular apartments for international students in the city centre that are suitable for both short and long-term accommodation including Unilodge, Empire Apartments, Princeton Apartments, and Columbia Apartments. Impression Real Estate, just up the road from campus, is another good place to visit when looking for an apartment to rent.

Shared living (we call this “flatting”)

Living with other students or friends is cost-effective as you share costs such as rent, utilities and sometimes even the food bill if you do shared meals. Check out our student Facebook group, called OPAIC Student Community. Lots of students post here looking for roommates or accommodation. You can also search for rentals on the TradeMe website. Visit the Tenancy Services website to learn about the rights and responsibilities of renters in New Zealand.

Homestay Accommodation

Homestays are a popular form of accommodation for international students and visitors, especially for those who want to improve their English and experience New Zealand culture. It is a great way to settle in a new country and get to know its surroundings. Two homestay providers we work with are Host Families NZ and Auckland Homestay Services.

Host Families NZ matches students and visitors with their ideal host family by providing each party with a detailed profile. You can feel safe and secure knowing that all host families are interviewed, and police screened. Whether you’re looking for short-term or long-term stays, their dedicated and experienced team match you with your ideal host. The placement fee is $300 and weekly accommodation is $330. Additional fees may be charged if you have special food requirements. You can expect a safe and welcoming family environment, a private bedroom, laundry availability, breakfast and dinner every day, lunches over the weekends, internet, electricity and water, and 24-hour support in case of an emergency. Auckland Homestay Services arrange for students to stay in the welcoming home of an approved family in Auckland. Your stay includes all meals and a private, furnished bedroom. The cost is $350 per week for two meals Monday-Friday and three meals Saturday and Sunday. There is also a $300 placement fee. Please email [email protected] for more information.

Be sure to do your research before committing to something permanent. If you're unsure, it's a good idea to book some short-term accommodation for your arrival to give you some time to get a feel for the city, and the people you meet. Then you can confidently commit to a longer-term lease.

Scholarship Terms and Conditions

This scholarship supports international students who will live in our student village, Te Pa Tauira, Tauira, for the full academic year (mid Feb 2026 to end November 2026 - semester 1 and semester 2).
You must be between the ages of 18 and 23 to receive this scholarship.
The goal is to help ease your living costs while studying at Otago Polytechnic.
You apply by indicating interest in your application to live in the student village.
The scholarship provides either a meal plan for the first semester of 2026 OR a $2,000 discount on accommodation fees.

Scholarship recipients can choose one of the following:

A meal plan for the first semester of 2026 (valued at $3,000),OR
A $2,000 accommodation fee discount applied directly to your 2026 accommodation costs.

To be considered for this scholarship, applicants must meet all the following criteria:

Be an international student, meaning you are not a New Zealand citizen or resident. Check if you should choose Domestic or International.
Be between the ages of 18–23 as of the start of Semester 1, 2026 (i.e., you must turn 18 by February 2026).
Be enrolled full-time in a 2 year diploma or bachelor’s degree or postgraduate programme at Otago Polytechnic, Dunedin campus.
Commit to staying at Te Pa Tauira Student Village for the full academic year (February 2026 – November 2026).
Submit an accommodation application for Te Pa Tauira through the standard application process.

Please note:

Exchange students and study abroad students are not eligible for this scholarship.

The scholarship is only valid for accommodation at Te Pa Tauira – Otago Polytechnic Student Village.
Students must maintain full-time enrolment throughout the academic year the scholarship was issued for
The scholarship is not transferable or redeemable for cash.
Payment of semester 1 fees are required to be paid upfront prior to move in and the scholarship will be applied to the second semester fees.
Recipients must meet the requirements of their Residential Agreement and comply with theVillage rules of Te Pa Tauira.
In the event of change in enrolment including withdrawal from study, the successful recipient is required to repay the full sum of the scholarship to Otago Polytechnic.
The scholarship may be held concurrently with other awards/grants, subject to approval of Otago Polytechnic.
Otago Polytechnic Limited reserve the right to terminate the scholarship if the recipient ceases to follow regulations of the programme of study and/or brings the reputation of Otago Polytechnic disrepute.
