Overview

The University of Central Lancashire is a public university in Preston, Lancashire, England. Its origins can be traced back to the 1828 establishment of the Institution for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge. Following that, it was known as Harris Art College, then Preston Polytechnic, and finally Lancashire Polytechnic before being given university status by the Privy Council in 1992.

    • The Center for World University Rankings (CWUR) publishes the largest academic study of global universities featuring 19,788 institutions.
    • In the 2021-22 edition of the CWUR’s ‘Global 2000 List’, UCLan has been ranked in position 1334, within the top 7% of all universities worldwide. Nationally it is ranked in 72nd place.
    • The University scored highly in the ‘Alumni Employment’ measure (ranked 1255) which assesses the number of UCLan graduates who have held top executive positions at the world's largest companies relative to the University's size.
