Overview

The University was founded as Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland University College in 1921. The site for the University was donated by a local businessman, Thomas Fielding Johnson, in order to create a living memorial for all local people who made sacrifices during the First World War. This is reflected in the University's motto Ut vitam habeant – 'so that they may have life'.

Students were first admitted to the college in 1921, sitting examinations for external degrees awarded of the University of London. In 1927 the institution became University College, Leicester; 30 years later the college was granted its Royal Charter. This gave it the status of a University with the right to award its own degrees.

Admission Requirements

The following requirements must be fulfilled to get admitted to the University of Leicester

International students are considered on a case-by-case basis. There can be some additional requirements, depending on the program you are applying to.
Students are required to submit their original transcripts from their last attended academic institutions. If they are not in English, then submit the translated copies of the same along with the originals.
Applicants must be 18 years old at the time of the beginning of the course.
You need to submit your English language proficiency test scores if you are coming from a non-English speaking country.

Accomodation

It is really important to make your accommodation arrangements for your first days in the United Kingdom before you leave your home country. University of Leicester offers a variety of accommodation options to suit your needs and we can help you make the best choice for your situation.

Our postgraduate accommodation is available at both The City and The Village. The City features our brand-new Freemens Common accommodation and is a short walk to campus and the city centre. The Village is surrounded by an abundance of green open space and residents will receive a free University shuttle bus pass for ease of travel to and from University. Both sites offer self-catered accommodation options and our team will aim to group postgraduate students together at each location.

As a new postgraduate student, you're guaranteed an offer of University-managed accommodation if you apply by 1 September in the year that you start your course.

Renting privately

If you'd prefer not to live in halls there is a range of private sector accommodation available.

Sulets is a lettings service designed specifically for students and conveniently based in our Students' Union. It is the recommended lettings agency for our students looking for private rented accommodation in Leicester. Whether you're searching for a luxury studio, an apartment or a house, Sulets has the home for you.
