Wintec is one of New Zealand's largest Institutes of Technology/Polytechnics (ITPs) and a leading provider of high quality, vocational and professional education in the Waikato region. There are over 1700 international students studying at Wintec, from 50 different countries.
Wintec is a subsidiary of Te Pukenga – New Zealand Institute of Skills and Technology.
Wintec started as the Hamilton Technical College in 1924 and became the Waikato Institute of Technology in 1968. Based in Hamilton and servicing the greater Waikato region, Wintec delivers technical, vocational, and professional education across a broad range of certificates through to master’s-level programmes.

Hamilton City Campus
The historic Hamilton City Campus is located in the heart of Hamilton Kirikiriroa. There are food outlets on campus, with eateries, shops, the Waikato River, Lake Rotoroa, and public transport just a short walk away. The Gallagher Hub, Atrium, and the Wintec Marae are the highlights of the City Campus.

Admission Requirements
The following requirements must be fulfilled to get admitted to the Waikato Institute of Technology (Wintec):
- International students are considered on a case-by-case basis. There can be some additional requirements, depending on the program you are applying to.
- Students are required to submit their original transcripts from their last attended academic institutions. If they are not in English, then submit the translated copies of the same along with the originals.
- Applicants must be 18 years old at the time of the beginning of the course.
- You need to submit your English language proficiency test scores if you are coming from a non-English speaking country.
Please note: If you are not a New Zealand citizen or a permanent resident of New Zealand, you must obtain a valid study permit before you come to New Zealand.

Accomodation
Are you looking for on-site accommodation while you study at Wintec? Find your home away from home here with us.
We know that everyone’s needs are different. Our accommodation services recognise this. That’s why we offer three different styles of accommodation for our students.
- If this is your first time away from home, the Student Village based at our City Campus, with meals provided, is a convenient, supportive environment for you.
- For those seeking more independence and still want to be apart of a student community, the Wintec Apartments are a great option. This city-based accommodation is popular with mature students and international students, who are happy to arrange their own meals.
- The Rotokauri Eco Village, suited for students who are aged 20+ or second-year (or higher) students, provides an experience similar to flatting, where accommodation is shared between four students.
Homestay
Homestay is where you stay with New Zealand families, in their homes. Our Homestay hosts are carefully selected for their kind and caring nature. You will get to improve your English by talking to them; you will also be able to enjoy family activities, celebrations, religious practices, and sporting events.
When living in a homestay, the host will provide you with:
- A clean, comfortable home with a happy and relaxed atmosphere
- A furnished bedroom with a bed and comfortable mattress. A wardrobe or chest of drawers for clothing storage
- A desk or small table with a chair and lamp for study
- A heater (if required in winter)
- Access to Wi-Fi
- Access to kitchen facilities, laundry & ironing
- Three meals a day, 7 days a week (includes lunch for school) and
- Access to snack
Student Village
- Only a five minute walk from the Wintec City Campus and downtown Hamilton, the Wintec Student Village offers a relaxed atmosphere, a pastoral care environment and a range of social and cultural activities through the year.
- Bedrooms include a bed, study desk, cupboards and a wardrobe, with access to a phone, internet, kitchenette (excluding oven), separate toilet and shower. There is a shared full kitchen, TV lounge, games room and laundry.
- Three main meals are provided on weekdays and two main meals on the weekend.
Wintec Apartments
- Avoid the unforeseen flatting costs of internet, phone, power, transport and other outgoings and enjoy the benefits of living amongst other students on the campus in a modern, safe, and secure environment.
- The Wintec Apartments provide accommodation for mature students and international students who are looking for a convenient, affordable, shared living experience.
- You'll get your own bedroom furnished with a king single bed, wardrobe, desk, heater, and chairs.
- The apartments are self-catering and provide an experience similar to flatting.

We're committed to making sure you have all the resources and help necessary to complete your study here at Wintec. That's why we have a range of services available on campus to help you with your studies.
- Student Learning Services - Our learning advisors are available to help develop your writing, critical thinking, and research and study skills. They can work alongside you and your tutors in the classroom, coordinate group-study sessions, connect you with other students studying the same things, or provide one-to-one support.
- Student Advisors - Our student advisors and kai?whina are your first point of contact if you need a friendly face to help you navigate your journey. They work closely with all the student support service providers. This means they can point you in the right direction, whatever your question might be. You will find them in the Te Kete K?nae and Student Life offices.
- Employment advice and support - If you need help preparing your application for a holiday job, part-time work, or your first graduate role, we offer workshops and guidance with CV preparation, cover letter writing, and interview planning.
- Computer access - The Gallagher Hub at the City Campus has computers for you to use 24-hours-a-day, seven-days-a-week. The hub at the Rotokauri Campus also provides computers for you to use during regular day-time hours. Both the City and Rotokauri campuses have high-speed wireless internet so you can bring your own device to campus. Both the campuses have laptop dispensers where you can access loan laptop to use around the campus (including in class) for up to four hours. You also have access to the Information Technology Services (ITS) Helpdesk, with staff available to help you with computers, My learning web page.
- Student Accessibility Services - We have a dedicated team ready to help enable students’ academic abilities and opportunities. If you have a physical, learning, or psychological impairment, you may be able to access assistance with your studies.
- Library support - There are on-site libraries at the City and Rotokauri campuses. You can access many resources online, including a broad range of specialist databases and online
eBooks. Our library staff can help you find useful resources - you can take advantage of one-to-one drop-in sessions or contact them via email for assistance. If you are studying by distance learning, you can get material sent directly to your door. - Chaplaincy - At Wintec, we have an ecumenical chaplain and a Catholic chaplain to support and encourage you during your journey here. Regardless of your background or beliefs, they are available for support to help you with any spiritual or religious questions you may have and provide a listening ear and a safe place to talk to when you just need a chat or coffee.
- International students - Studying away from your home country is an exciting opportunity, and we want to make it as easy for you as possible. Our International team will support you as you settle into your new learning environment and the wider community. They can assist you in finding somewhere to live, help you understand New Zealand’s culture and customs, and offer pastoral care and support
- Multi-faith rooms - Prayer rooms with wash facilities are available at both the City and Rotokauri campuses.
- Moodle - Having access to lecture notes, research material, and practice tests in one place makes studying much easier Moodle is your go-to online learning tool. As well as your course material, Moodle will give you access to a help centre, where you will find information on referencing and assignment writing. You can access Moodle anytime, anywhere – all you need is a computer and an internet connection.
- Childcare - The City Campus has an on-site childcare centre.
- Health Services - Security staff are available at the City Campus 24-hours-a day, seven-days-a-week.
- Counselling - Our Counselling service provides students with short-term counselling support. This could mean support for matters that are affecting your studies such as stress, anxiety, life challenges, relationships, sexuality, and mental health.
Sessions are free for all students/?konga and are usually 50-60 minutes long. This confidential service allows you to discuss your concerns and emotions in a safe place. For many, one to two sessions may be enough, but if you do need more we can discuss this with you and develop a plan or offer referrals if appropriate.
