George Brown College is a public college of applied arts, technology, and professional education based in downtown Toronto, Ontario, Canada. History & Background

  • Founded in 1967/1968 as part of Ontario’s public college system, it was named after George Brown (1818–1880), a Canadian politician, newspaper founder, and education advocate. 
  • The college opened its doors in March 1968 with around 2,000 students and has since grown significantly. 
  • Over the decades, George Brown expanded its programs, campuses, research, and partnerships with industry.

George Brown College’s facilities are located in central Toronto, giving students access to one of Canada’s largest economic, cultural, and business hubs:

  • Main campuses include:
    • St. James Campus—major hub for business, media, social services, design, and culinary arts programs. 
    • Casa Loma Campus – houses technology, construction, and engineering programs (historically). 
    • Waterfront Campus—home to health sciences and design, including the new Limberlost Place sustainable building.
