Program Overview

Whether you dream of training elite athletes, coaching local teams or becoming a physical education (PE) teacher, our course equips you with the practical skills and scientific know-how to adopt the holistic development approach needed to excel.

Extensive sport and sport science facilities enable you to test, monitor and train the mind and body. Using sport psychology to nurture mental strength, discipline and confidence, for example, or nutrition, physiology, biomechanics, strength and conditioning to improve power, skill, ability, technique, fitness and health.

Home to Weightlifting Wales’s National Performance Centre, Bangor enjoys an international reputation in strength and conditioning, sport and exercise psychology, motor control and learning, and clinical exercise physiology.

The teaching team has a wealth of experience in physical education and coaching: one of our academics supported the Welsh government to develop the new curriculum, another is a UK Coaching Council (UKCC) Level 4 qualified Coach – the highest level available.

Active researchers and practitioners, they work closely with schools across Wales and benefit from links with sports organisations and professional clubs throughout the UK, including UK Sport, Sport Wales, the England and Wales Cricket Board, WRU, and Premier League.

This not only provides opportunities for work placements, but also helps to ensure your learning remains relevant and grounded in real-life scenarios. You’ll plan, develop and evaluate tailored exercise, intervention and lesson plans for physical and psychological development – practising on peers (and vice versa) in the gym and our £1 million plus physiology teaching and exercise labs.

This degree will equip you with the necessary knowledge and professional competencies to support your progression onto relevant postgraduate courses (e.g., Postgraduate Certificate in Education) in order to successfully pursue careers within the disciplines of sports science, physical education and coaching (e.g., Physical Education Teacher, Performance or Development Coach).

You’ll also be well prepared to work within other areas of sport (e.g., Applied Physiologist / Psychologist), health (e.g., physiotherapy or sports therapy, after postgraduate training), exercise (e.g., exercise trainer), or research (e.g., progress to PhD / Research Fellow careers). There are various options through which a student can get a post study work visa in the UK.
