Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Sport and Exercise Science

Program Overview

Unhealthy diet and lack of physical activity are two of the leading global risks to health: knowledge of exercise physiology and nutrition can help encourage people of all ages to take better care of their health. Alternatively, an understanding of risk and recovery can make workplaces safer, especially in hazardous roles like the military or emergency services.

Home to Weightlifting Wales’s National Performance Centre, Bangor enjoys an international reputation in sport and exercise psychology, motor control and learning, clinical exercise physiology, strength, and conditioning.

This Bachelor of Science in Sport and Exercise Science provides a broad and in-depth study of human function in relation to sport, physical activity, and general wellbeing. This prepares you to develop innovative psychological and physiological interventions to promote sport performance, exercise, and health.

Like all of our sports science degrees, learning is very much hands-on, and research led. Internationally renowned researchers, active sports professionals and practitioners, the teaching team has a wealth of experience. Many of our academics are HCPC accredited psychologists working with elite athletes and teams.

Their expertise spans performance psychology, human physiology, talent development, athlete monitoring, skill learning, training effectiveness, training, and injury. They will share their experiences of working as sport and exercise scientists with Olympic medal-winning athletes and the World Cup winning England cricket Team.

This helps to ensure your learning remains relevant, grounded in real-life scenarios and with opportunities to hear from guest speakers, which have previously included the Performance Director at Short Track Speed Skating and the Lead Psychologist for GB Cycling. It can also lead to work placements with the option of taking either a short-term or one-year work placement, or both. Previous students within the School, for example, have worked with Snowdonia Watersports, Welsh Sailing, the Menai Track and Field Club and Welsh Rugby Union.
