Bachelor of Arts (Hons) in Cymraeg (Welsh) and Sociology (Optional Placement Year)

Program Overview

Sociology investigates social life and the way it shapes people’s behaviour, beliefs and identity. Identifying social problems and understanding how social conditions impact our lives – in education, employment, wealth, health and more – is the first step towards making positive change.

On the degree in Welsh and Sociology, we teach all compulsory Sociology modules in both Welsh and English. Perfect for those looking to further develop their skills and prepare for a career working through the medium of Welsh. You will explore and discuss the history, literature, and culture of Wales improving your language proficiency and cultural awareness.

The School of Welsh is one of the oldest at the University, since its establishment in 1889 its contribution to the literary and cultural life of Wales has been crucial. Our academic team include some of the most prominent writers and poets in contemporary Wales. Garnering international acclaim, they have won awards including Book of the Year, Prose Medals, Drama Medals, Chairs and Crowns at the Urdd Eisteddfod and National Eisteddfod.

Welsh is spoken in north-west Wales more than anywhere else in the world, providing unrivalled opportunities to improve your proficiency in the use of Welsh. At Bangor University, we offer Welsh-speaking work placements and the chance to interact with the many Welsh-speaking professionals and communities we collaborate with.

Our Sociology degrees draw on theory, evidence and real-world experience to make sense of social structures, social identities and social change. This aims to equip you with the tools and mindset to tackle social problems in the future.

You’ll gain valuable skills for careers in education, media, and cultural heritage. Our graduates work in areas such as the civil service, social services, broadcasting, publishing, teaching, translation, and the arts.

You’ll be taught by academics with expertise areas such as social identities, social issues, crime and justice, media, political action and technology. You’ll also hear first-hand experiences from those supporting social change. Previous talks have covered racial equality and children’s rights.
