Diploma in Medical Radiation Technology

Program Overview

Medical radiation technologists (MRT) are health care professionals who provide patient-centered care in an inter-professional environment. Using problem-solving and critical thinking skills, MRTs acquire quality radiographic and computed tomography (CT) images to assist in the diagnosis of trauma and disease processes.

As a student in this program, you will gain the knowledge, skills, and ability to support medical teams by providing diagnostic-quality images with excellent patient care expertise. You will develop the core professional competencies required of an entry-to-practice MRT during a full calendar year placement at one of our affiliated hospital sites.

This is a physically and mentally demanding profession and will require you to be in good physical health and have the ability to lift heavy patients, stand for long periods of time, and have strong visual and hearing acuity.

Fieldwork/Placement
You must participate in a clinical experience during the final 3 semesters of the program, where you will work and study in an inter-professional environment to provide safe patient-centered care while maintaining Medical Radiation Technology standards of practice.

Clinical experience is gained at a variety of affiliate hospitals across Canada. During your clinical rotations, you may be exposed to disturbing situations when dealing with trauma, operating room, and general hospital patient situations.

When you begin your studies, you will be asked to indicate your preferred clinical placement location. Every effort will be made to accommodate your preference for clinical placement; however, due to the restricted availability of placements in specialized fields, the location of your placement site may be different from what you have selected and you may be required to complete your placement at a site and/or in a city other than Sudbury.  If multiple students request a placement at a site where only one opportunity is available, placements will be allocated by lottery method. Please note that all related clinical placement expenses such as travel, parking, and accommodation are the responsibility of the student.

To graduate from the Medical Radiation Technology program at Cambrian College, you must demonstrate the skills, knowledge, and judgment determined by the competency profile of the Canadian Association of Medical Radiation Technologists (CAMRT). These competencies must be demonstrated within the time frame of the clinical portion of the program.
