Bachelor of Arts (Hons) in Cymraeg (Welsh) And Music

Program Overview

You’ll discover that music and literature interact closely in Wales: from folklore, choirs and Welsh hymns during rugby to the highly regarded Welsh National Opera and the National Eisteddfod, the largest festival of competitive poetry and music in Europe.

Exploring rich and diverse literary texts from the tales of the Mabinogion to the dynamic literature of contemporary Wales, you can connect with the longest continually-spoken language of Britain, in the unique Celtic linguistic environment of Gwynedd, where Welsh remains the language of the majority. This means you can become fully immersed in the Welsh language, its history, culture, and society, whether you are a native speaker or less confident in your skills (we teach students at all levels, including complete beginners).

In Music, you will be taught by world-renowned composers, performers and musicologists, who will encourage you to explore the connections between all three fundamental aspects of musical study. Staff expertise particularly lies in early music, 20th- and 21st-century music (including popular music), music editing, Welsh music, sonic art, composition, and contemporary and interactive performance. We enjoy close links with leading organisations such as the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, Venue Cymru and Ensemble Cymru.

On this degree in Welsh and Music, you will divide your time equally between the two subjects.

A big advantage of studying Welsh at Bangor University is the breadth, choice, and flexibility within the curriculum. You can explore one of Europe’s richest literary cultures, discover the roots of Welsh identity through ancient and modern history, or be inspired by the contemporary politics of a devolved government.

The Department of Welsh and Celtic Studies is one of the oldest at the University. Since its establishment in 1889, its contribution to the literary and cultural life of Wales has been crucial. You will be taught by some of the most prominent writers and poets in contemporary Wales. Garnering international acclaim, they have won awards including Book of the Year, and the highest prizes – Prose Medals, Drama Medals, Chairs and Crowns at the Urdd Eisteddfod and National Eisteddfod.

At Bangor making music and understanding music go hand in hand. You can explore the history and development of your favourite genres, discover new styles and repertoires, and learn more about the art and craft of music.

As well as unrivalled performance opportunities, our extensive music facilities include two professional standard concert halls, rehearsal spaces, practice rooms, and four 24/7 electroacoustic composition and recording studios. We offer an excellent range of instruments and equipment, including a full-size organ, chamber organ, several harpsichords, harps, and four new Steinway grand pianos. Our dynamic cultural and music-making community includes the University’s Symphony Orchestra and Chorus, Chamber Choir, String Orchestra, Concert Band, Jazz Band, and a range of specialist ensembles.
