Bachelor of Arts (Hons) in Modern Languages and Cymraeg (Welsh)

Program Overview

You’ll learn the importance of the Welsh language and your chosen language in a wider international context. Studying a modern language with Welsh will prepare you to support this critical contribution to our future society. As part of the Welsh department there are also opportunities to study Irish.

Catering for beginners and more advanced language learners, our Modern Languages and Welsh degree enables you to develop your competence in writing, speaking and comprehension in French, Spanish, German or Chinese. At the same time, you’ll improve your proficiency in Welsh and learn about diverse aspects of Welsh culture from a variety of different periods.

Being a bilingual or multilingual employee can open doors to a wide range of careers. Here in Wales, Welsh Government policy includes targets to double the number of Welsh speakers to one million by 2050.

Since the University was founded in 1884, Bangor has excelled at the teaching of and research in Modern Languages. Our staff have expertise in literature, travel writing, translation, film, performance, visual cultures, popular culture, socio-political change and the exchange between cultures.

The compulsory year abroad is fantastic preparation for today’s multilingual, multicultural world of work. You can add a second year abroad via the ‘International Experience’ option should you wish to do so. Using your language skills in real-life situations not only increases your proficiency, but also boosts your confidence, independence and resilience.

One of the things that sets Bangor University apart is our bilingual community, around 70% of our staff have Welsh language skills. We also benefit from being based in Gwynedd, which has the nation’s highest percentage of Welsh speakers.
