In Linguistics, this focuses on how we learn a language, how language varies between speakers and geographic regions, and how it influences thinking and the ways in which we interact we each other. Psychology helps you understand how, why and what happens when our brain and body systems stop working so well, are damaged, or develop in divergent ways.
Our internationally recognised research into language and cognition covers applied and theoretical specialisms. These include acquisition, processing, comprehension, disorders and atypical language development, use, structure, variation, change, communication, maintenance, preservation, teaching, and speech and language technologies.
Psychology has been taught at Bangor University since 1963. Welcoming students from all over the world, we provide a multicultural environment in which to study human behaviour, taught by internationally renowned staff at the forefront of research to promote psychological wellbeing at all stages of life.
Psychology modules range from clinical psychology and mindfulness to disorders of literacy, counselling, brain degeneration and substance abuse. In Linguistics, you can explore more advanced and applied aspects of English language and linguistics such as language acquisition, discourse analysis, corpus linguistics, psycholinguistics, languages in contact or historical change.
Outstanding facilities include a professional grade sound/recording studio and speech laboratory with Yamaha, Alesis and RØDE recording equipment, an eye tracking laboratory with a Tobii Pro X2-60 eye tracker, and an ERP (Event Related Potential) laboratory with an actiCHamp Plus ERP machine to measure the brain’s electrical activity in response to language. An extensive range of equipment and specialised software is available to loan for student projects, such as state of the art ERP, eye tracking, sound recording, corpus and psycholinguistic resources. In addition to our dedicated library, Bangor Linguistics Society organises regular socials, guest lectures and workshops.
You’ll gain direct experience of key tools used to support and understand human behaviour such as online surveys, psychometric testing, cognitive assessment. You will have access to specialist neuroimaging technologies which are used for diagnosis, treatment and intervention. The University’s day care and child research centre also provides an exclusive resource to observe children’s language, learning, and development (subject to consent).
