Bachelor of Law (Hons) in Law with Cymraeg (Welsh) (Optional Placement Year)

Program Overview

At Bangor University, we bring the study of law to life. Take part in mock trials, internal moots in English and Welsh, visit law firms, judicial institutions, and government institutions. You'll also have the chance to hear from practising lawyers, legal experts, and specialist law firms. Extra-curricular activities from our active student-run Law Society include the popular ‘LawSoc balls’ and trips to law fairs.

On this Law degree, you’ll gain the legal and language skills required in a bilingual legal profession. Since devolution in 1998, there has been a growing demand for bilingual lawyers and those with legal knowledge – in both the public and private arenas. Not just to aid treatment of victims and defendants in court, but also help Welsh citizens understand their legal rights and obligations.

As Wales continues to develop its own distinct legal personality, all primary and secondary legislation produced by the Senedd must be published in both English and Welsh. This requires legal experts to help with bilingual drafting of legislation, who can read and understand both versions of the text. Clients also need lawyers who can advise and advocate for them in the language they feel most comfortable in.

You will graduate with a Law degree which meets the academic requirements for qualification as a barrister (Bar Standards Board compliant), but also provides essential knowledge for students aspiring to be solicitors. Amongst an attractive array of modules, you can choose vocational subjects tested in the Solicitors’ Qualifying Examinations (SQE) - such as Business Law, Wills and Estates, and Property Practice - providing you with a gateway to professional training to become a solicitor.

A degree in law also develops lots of practical competencies: research skills, an analytical mind, the ability to listen, form sound arguments, read and quickly process complex information. The combination of legal and linguistic skills would be beneficial for a variety of non-legal careers, such as government or local authority, non-governmental organisations and policy work.
