Program Overview

Indulge your passions, learn French, Spanish, German or Chinese at degree level, alongside topics in History spanning the Neolithic period to the contemporary world. We cater for those beginning a language from scratch, as well as more advanced learners.

Small group teaching not only facilitates more opportunities for you practise oral, aural and translation skills, but also makes it easier to ask questions and gain feedback.

The year abroad is fantastic preparation for today’s multilingual, multicultural world of work. Using your language skills in real-life situations not only increases your proficiency, but also boosts your confidence, independence and resilience.

Our staff have expertise in translation, film, literature, travel writing, performance, visual cultures, popular culture, socio-political change and transnational cultures. We have experts in all fields of history from the Middle Ages to the 20th century, working principally on Wales, Britain, Europe and the USA. From monarchs, monks, princes, Vikings, kings and dictators to holy, civil and world wars, there’s something for everyone.

The oldest city in Wales, Bangor is an ideal place to study your BA (Hons) Modern Languages and History. The Cathedral is located on a site used for Christian worship since the sixth century. A short journey away and you can explore Segontium and Caer Gybi Roman Forts, the medieval Caernarfon Castle and Menai Bridge, prehistoric burial ground of Bryn Celli Ddu, and Beaumaris Castle – the last in Edward I’s ‘iron ring’.
