Bachelor of Arts (Hons) in Modern and Contemporary History (Optional Placement Year)

Program Overview

You will examine contemporary issues in their historical context, exploring the origins of modern society and politics. From the Blitz to Brexit, Russia’s Cold War to the Ukraine War, much of this fascinating history is still in living memory.

We have an excellent reputation for teaching and research. In modern history, our staff specialise in areas such as: 20th century political culture; social and political history; war and protest; everyday and urban history. We also have a major interest in Welsh history, from the age of the Welsh princes to devolution.

Bangor is an ideal place to study your History degree: one of the oldest city in Wales, its Cathedral is located on a site used for Christian worship since the sixth century. Bangor Pier provided access to and from passenger ferries as far back as 1292. You’ll join a welcoming, supportive, close-knit community, which makes your learning experience more personal.

A short journey away and you can explore the Segontium Roman Fort, established nearly two millennia ago, the medieval Caernarfon Castle and Menai Bridge. The island of Anglesey is home to the prehistoric burial ground and Neolithic chambered tomb of Bryn Celli Ddu, Caer Gybi, a Roman fort built in the third century, and Beaumaris Castle – the last in the ‘iron ring’ of imposing castles built by Edward I.

You’ll be given opportunities to study abroad or work on placement. Previous students have worked at various National Trust sites, with local politicians, and supported the University’s Archive services in its historical documentation of the Welsh in Patagonia, South America.
