Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Marine Biology and Zoology

Program Overview

Situated in close proximity to the mountains of Eryri (Snowdonia) within a few metres of the sea, Bangor University offers easy access to a range of diverse habitat types and animals. Ideal for fieldwork, you’ll undertake experiments and analysis in estuaries, on the seashore, at sea, on land, and in the lab.

With a dedicated School of Ocean Sciences, Bangor University is one of the largest and oldest university centres in Britain for teaching and research in marine sciences. Joined by expertise in the School of Natural Sciences, you’ll be taught by staff involved in cutting-edge research into climate change and conservation, with projects ranging from frozen polar seas to rainforests, savannahs and beyond.

Our natural and ocean sciences facilities are second to none. These include our own 35 metre research vessel, the Prince Madog, several smaller work boats, an algal culture unit, specialised nutrition, microbiological, chemical and environmental labs, environmentally controlled rooms, imaging facilities, and extensive analytical equipment.

When it comes to marine animals, we benefit from having shellfish beds, seal haul-out sites and dolphin pods nearby, as well as our own tropical and temperate marine and freshwater aquaria. Our onsite herpetariaum features reptiles, rodents and insects. Treborth Botanic Garden has a pigeon loft for bird cognition, physiology, and biomechanics research, and you can find Alpaca, sheep and bee hives on the farm at Henfaes Research Centre. Bangor University also has its own natural history museum with diverse vertebrate and invertebrate specimens, including marine fossils.

The University is home to the Environment Centre for Wales, a partnership with the UK Centre for Ecology and Hydrology and British Trust for Ornithology Wales. Marine Centre Wales was established to promote discourse and research into aquaculture, coastal water quality, offshore renewable energy, fisheries, flood risk, marine data, and climate change.

Elsewhere in Bangor, you’ll find regional offices of NRW, D?r Cymru/Welsh Water, Royal Society for the Protection of Birds and North Wales Wildlife Trust (and ). Strong links with these employers provide and volunteering, and some contribute to teaching. some contribute to teaching.
