Bachelor of Arts (Hons) in Media and English Literature

Program Overview

You will learn to appreciate the creative and critical styles, contexts, themes and attitudes used by authors, editors and creative directors to convey meaning, ideas and information. At the same time, you will engage in the technologies and techniques found in television, radio, film, podcasting, digital media, as well as emerging forms of media such as TikTok and AI.

Potential literature content spans a broad range of genres, periods, cultures and themes, analysing works from contemporary and historical perspectives. One of the oldest English Literature departments in the UK, Bangor’s specialisms range from the literatures of the Middle Ages and Renaissance period, through to Victorian and Modernist and contemporary forms. Our staff have published on topics such as gender and devotion, materiality and book history, social networks and infrastructure.

Studying Media and English Literature in combination provides a comprehensive perspective on storytelling and communications techniques. Drawing on inspiration from others, including your peers, enhances your own ability to craft compelling written and visual work in various media forms.

At Bangor, we enjoy strong links with local media production companies, including BBC Wales and S4C and independent TV company Cwmni Da. We have strong links with BAFTA Cymru with whom former film students have gone on to win top awards. There are opportunities to gain practical experience, forging links with potential future employers in the media and creative industries, as well as opportunities to attend industry talks and take part in workshops.

Our facilities include a fully equipped media centre with editing suites and the latest 4K digital filmmaking equipment, Bangor is also home to an extensive archive collection. Pontio, our arts and innovation centre is home to two theatres and professionally equipped public screening spaces. As well as hosting our own media showcase, Pontio Cinema runs a range of industry events by the likes of the British Film Institute and Film Wales Network.
