Bachelor of Arts (Hons) in Film Studies and English Literature (Optional Placement Year)

Program Overview

There is a close relationship between film and literature, which is why studying them in combination can be so rewarding. Both create meaning and rely on storytelling to engage their audiences. They conjure up images – physical or imagined – and use similar structures and devices of narrative and character development.

The study of film combines historical, critical, and creative work and practice. You will learn about the film industry, its history and the theory, as well as filmmaking techniques. You will also explore social media, television, radio, computer games, music videos, podcasting and AI as media. You will be able to explore both factual and fiction filmmaking, getting hands-on experience of the production process, including scriptwriting, directing, producing, art direction, cinematography, and postproduction.

Potential literature content spans a broad range of genres, periods, cultures, and themes, analysing works from contemporary and historical perspectives. One of the oldest English Literature departments in the UK, Bangor University’s specialisms range from the literatures of the Middle Ages and Renaissance period, through to Victorian and Modernist forms. Our staff have published on topics such as gender and devotion, materiality and book history, social networks, and infrastructure.

There are lots of opportunities to gain practical experience helping organising screenings, film festivals and special events at Pontio or via the Bangor Film Society. You can also collaborate on different projects, such as short films, with students who are film makers, actors, composers, and writers.

Our high-quality production facilities include editing suites and the latest 4K digital filmmaking equipment. You’ll also have access to the professionally equipped public screening spaces in Pontio. As well as hosting our own media showcase, its cinema runs a range of industry events by the likes of the British Film Institute and Film Wales Network.
