Bachelor of Arts (Hons) in English Language for TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language)- Optional Placement Year

Program Overview

Modules focused on Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) and Second Language Acquisition (SLA) give you a solid introduction to the pedagogy, methodology, and best practices to become an effective teacher. You will have opportunities to apply your training in an actual TEFL classroom with a lesson plan assessment activity.

At Bangor University, your teaching is informed by our internationally recognised research into language and cognition. Our specialisms include acquisition, processing, comprehension, disorders and atypical language development, use, structure, variation, change, communication, maintenance, preservation, teaching, and technologies.

Providing excellent preparation for future teaching, on this English Language for TEFL degree, you will gain a deeper understanding and appreciation of the characteristics that build a language, including its grammar, vocabulary, syntax, phonetics, and semantic structure. You will explore the ways in which people’s language abilities develop – how our language changes according to the context of its use or who is speaking. You will also consider how language is organised and processed in the brain; how it is both learned and taught.

Outstanding facilities include a professional grade sound/recording studio and speech laboratory with Yamaha, Alesis and RØDE recording equipment, an eye tracking laboratory with a Tobii Pro X2-60 eye tracker, and an ERP (Event Related Potential) laboratory with an actiCHamp Plus ERP machine to measure the brain’s electrical activity in response to language. An extensive range of equipment and specialised software is available to loan for student projects, such as state of the art ERP, eye tracking, sound recording, corpus and psycholinguistic resources. In addition to our dedicated library, Bangor Linguistics Society organises regular socials, guest lectures and workshops, for example, in the use of British Sign Language (BSL).

You will have opportunities to put your theory into practice, planning lessons and evaluating the different teaching strategies used in language learning, both during lectures and in sessions offered by the University’s English Language Centre for Overseas Students (ELCOS). ELCOS, which teaches English and study skills to our international students, belongs to IATEFL, the International Association of Teachers of English as a Foreign Language.
