Bachelor of Arts (Hons) in Welsh, Theatre and Media (Optional Placement Year)

Program Overview

Welsh is a Celtic language at the cutting edge of modern modes of creativity. This course provides you with a firm grounding in literature and language with the opportunity of studying a combination of theatre, drama and media modules. Foster your creative talents in the company of some of Wales’s leading creative practitioners and follow career paths in the media, theatre sectors but also in education. If you want to complement a traditional academic route with exciting creative experiences in theatre and media, this is a course for you.

If you are planning on working in theatre or the media in the future, this course will equip you with the necessary skills to enter the profession. The course will not only give you a solid grounding in Welsh language and literature, but also give you the opportunity to combine creative, practical and academic elements of theatre, drama and the media. Develop your talent with some of Wales' leading practitioners, who continue to work professionally in the field. This course prepares you for a career in the arts, media and theatre or in education.

As well as giving you a strong grounding in Welsh language and literature there will also be an opportunity during the course to learn about various aspects of theatre and media as areas of the arts. There will be an opportunity to learn about the theoretical and historical aspects of these areas, such as the history of Welsh drama, the history of European drama, the tradition of stage adaptation, the study of Welsh screen works and the tradition of broadcasting for radio as a medium. There is also a wide cross-section of modules that give students the opportunity to nurture and develop practical skills in these areas, such as scripting skills (for TV and for stage), performance skills and directing skills as well as production skills for stage, television and radio.

Placement
This course is available with a Placement Year option where you will study for 1 additional year. The Placement Year is undertaken at the end of the second year and students are away for the whole of the academic year.

The Placement Year provides you with a fantastic opportunity to broaden your horizons and develop valuable skills and contacts through working with a self-sourced organisation relevant to your degree subject. The minimum period in placement (at one or more locations) is seven calendar months; more usually you would spend 10-12 months with a placement provider. You would normally start sometime in the period June to September of your second year and finish between June and September the following year. Placements can be UK-based or overseas and you will work with staff to plan and finalise the placement arrangements.
