Bachelor of Arts (Hons) in Criminology and Criminal Justice and Social Policy (Optional Placement Year)

Program Overview

Whether you're passionate about reducing inequality, improving criminal justice, or education, this Criminology and Criminal Justice and Social Policy degree empowers you to make a positive impact on the world. You will explore the causes and solutions of social problems, and victimisation in areas such as poverty and inequality both globally and locally.

You'll be encouraged to think critically and bring about positive change. Criminology and Criminal Justice is about understanding and addressing crime and its impacts, while Social Policy provides the tools to create equitable and effective solutions for society's challenges. Studying both disciplines will help you understand the complex social problems which often lead to crime, and explore how crime and criminal justice is shaped by broader social trends in inequality, welfare and social justice.

As well as examining what causes people to commit crime and how they respond to punishment and other deterrents, our Criminology and Criminal Justice and Social Policy degree provides practical knowledge and understanding of how the criminal justice system works.

We aim to equip you with a broad set of social research skills to understand and analyse some of society’s biggest issues. Specialist modules allow you to focus on complex areas of human behaviour such as drug abuse, interpersonal and domestic violence, and organised crime, and the social issues that influence them.

You’ll hear first-hand experiences from those supporting social change. Previous talks have covered racial equality (Race Council Cymru), children’s rights (Action For Children), food banks, and Universal Basic Income. Our strong links with criminal justice agencies locally, nationally and internationally provide opportunities for direct experience.
