Bachelor of Arts (Hons) in Creative Writing and Modern Languages

Program Overview

While studying different techniques and forms of creative writing, you will learn a modern language of your choice, immersing yourself in a foreign country, its language and culture on your year abroad.

Guided by published writers, poets and researchers, you will study and practise creative writing across a range of genres, forms, and media, from the traditional through to the experimental. You will discover your unique strengths as a writer and find new ways to engage creatively with different audiences.

At the same time, you will learn and develop your competence in writing, speaking and comprehension in one of the languages we offer at Bangor. Choose from our core languages French, Spanish, German, you can also study Chinese alongside one of our core languages.

You can also explore historical and cultural aspects relating to your chosen language and the communities that speak it, such as literature, film, contemporary issues or politics.

The compulsory year abroad is fantastic preparation for today’s multilingual, multicultural world of work. The experience can inform, inspire and influence your creative writing whilst improving your language skills.

When studying Creative Writing, the focus is very much on practical experience. You’ll be encouraged to build your professional network and play an active role in our creative community. Our teaching team are part of a vibrant community of writers and in the past influential writers have joined us in conversation, from the internationally acclaimed through to the rising stars of tomorrow – this includes former students now working as professional writers.

There are lots of opportunities to extend your creativity and develop proficiency in your language outside of the classroom. You can mentor pupils aged 12-14 learning languages in local schools, join our active LangSoc, or participate in student-run readings and activities organised by the Writers’ Guild.
