Bachelor of Arts (Hons) in Cymraeg (Welsh) with Creative Writing (Optional Placement Year)

Program Overview

At Bangor University you will have the opportunity to not only study and enjoy one of the most remarkable Celtic literatures in the world, but there will also be opportunities to pursue more practical modules that will prepare you for a successful career working bilingually.

This degree is taught entirely through the medium of Welsh, which means you can apply for the maximum financial incentives available as part of the Welsh Government’s commitment to develop a bilingual workforce.

Explore the rich and diverse literary texts from the tales of the Mabinogion to the dynamic literature of contemporary Wales. Studying and practising writing across a range of genres, forms, and media experience, spanning the traditional through to the experimental, helps you find new ways to engage wide and diverse audiences. You’ll discover new ways of thinking about texts, from critical exploration to creative involvement, while learning about the publishing industry and the ways in which texts are produced, marketed, and distributed.

Welsh and Celtic Studies is one of the oldest subjects taught at Bangor University. Since its establishment in 1889, its contribution to the literary and cultural life of Wales has been crucial. You will be taught by some of the most prominent writers and poets in contemporary Wales. Garnering international acclaim, they have won awards including Book of the Year, and the highest prizes – Prose Medals, Drama Medals, Chairs and Crowns at the Urdd Eisteddfod and National Eisteddfod.

This degree in Welsh and Creative Writing is designed for you to explore and develop your own creativity as a writer. You can develop your own creative practice in poetry, short stories, the novel and creative non-fiction.

Our dynamic, creative community hosts award-winning novelists and poets. There are regular student-led events at the University’s Arts and Innovation Centre, Pontio. The nearby Storiel art gallery and museum also hosts exhibitions, creative workshops and social history collections from North Wales.

At Bangor University, we offer Welsh-speaking work placements and the chance to interact with the many Welsh-speaking professionals and communities we collaborate with. Many of our students join Bangor University’s Welsh Students' Union and choose to live in our Welsh-speaking halls of residence, Neuadd JMJ.
