Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Wildlife Ecology and Conservation (Optional Placement Year)

Program Overview

We also take full advantage of the University’s own excellent facilities. With 82 hectares of woodlands, semi-natural grasslands, and farmland, our 252-hectare Henfaes Research Centre is a DEFRA study farm, part of the Global Farm Platform. Meanwhile, the grassland and woodland habitats at Treborth support many native animals and over 2,000 recorded plant species. Additionally, it houses Europe’s largest ground soil and plant root laboratory, as well as breeding programs for several threatened endemic Welsh plant species.

On this BSc (Hons) Wildlife Ecology and Conservation degree, you will be taught by staff whose conservation research covers an extremely wide range of fields, from zoology and ecology through to human behaviour and environmental economics. We work with researchers, conservation organisations, government agencies, and local community groups all over the world. Projects range from increasing the size and number of woodlands in the UK to protecting endangered primates in Zanzibar or marine biodiversity in the Caribbean.

A large choice of optional modules from across the natural and ocean sciences enables you to study the subjects which interest you most. You can choose diverse and fascinating topics ranging from herpetology to ornithology, applied botany to forest ecology, marine conservation, and exploitation, or the human aspects of conservation.

At Bangor University, our world-leading research is already helping to address the complex challenges caused by global environmental change, biodiversity loss, soil degradation, and unsustainable use of natural resources.

The University is home to the Environment Centre for Wales and Welsh branches of the UK Centre for Ecology and Hydrology and British Trust for Ornithology. We have strong links with Natural Resources Wales, D?r Cymru/Welsh Water, Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) and North Wales Wildlife Trust, whose regional offices are based in Bangor. Our links with these organizations help you gain a better understanding of professional-level conservation practice. We also work closely with Natural England, Eryri National Park Authority, the Environment Agency and Forestry Commission. Some contribute to teaching and offer opportunities for work placements.
