Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Zoology with Marine Zoology (Optional Placement Year)

Program Overview

This BSc degree in Zoology with Marine Zoology will give you a thorough grounding in general zoology, based on an exploration of the diversity of animal form and function, and an examination of their behaviour, evolution, ecology, development and morphology. You will also gain a specialised knowledge of the conservation, physiology and behaviour of marine invertebrates, through an exciting series of modules.

We will provide you with zoological training and equip you with skills necessary for a career in the field of zoology and marine science. We offer a fantastic mix of laboratory and field zoology experience on this degree, especially in relation to marine organisms and their habitats as Bangor is on the shores of the Menai Strait. Fieldwork is a very important aspect of this course and all our students enjoy them. On this course you will also gain a wealth of other transferable skills such as data analysis, group work, presentational skills and IT skills.

We have our own Zoology Museum with a large collection of vertebrate and invertebrate specimens and an extensive marine aquarium. Our location on the northern coast of the Snowdonia National Park and close proximity to miles of sandy beaches, makes it an ideal place to study Zoology with Marine Zoology.

Placement
This course is available with a Placement Year option where you will study for 1 additional year. The Placement Year is undertaken at the end of the second year and students are away for the whole of the academic year.

The Placement Year provides you with a fantastic opportunity to broaden your horizons and develop valuable skills and contacts through working with a self-sourced organisation relevant to your degree subject. The minimum period in placement (at one or more locations) is seven calendar months; more usually you would spend 10-12 months with a placement provider. You would normally start sometime in the period June to September of your second year and finish between June and September the following year. Placements can be UK-based or overseas and you will work with staff to plan and finalise the placement arrangements.
