Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Microbiology

Program Overview

  • You will have the opportunity to include a specialisation in Bacteriology, Parasitology or Virology.
  • Early in year 3 you will have the opportunity to put your Microbiology skills into practice in the field during the three-day Pathogen Ecology laboratory at the Field Studies Council Millport on the beautiful Isle of Cumbrae. In final year you will choose from a range of specialised advanced courses and undertake a research project under supervision within the University or at an external institution. You will present the results of your project in an assessed oral presentation to your peers and members of staff during the final year retreat at the Field Studies Council Millport. These projects include working in a research laboratory, undertaking public engagement or researching a dissertation topic.
  • Virtual Reality and mobile app technologies are used to enhance your learning during your degree programme.
  • You'll receive practical training in aspects of epidemiology at the Marine Biology Station at Millport in the Firth of Clyde.
  • Microbiology can be taken as an MSci, which includes an additional placement year between year 3 and the final year of the degree. This is normally spent doing research in industry or a research institute, in the UK or overseas, and often attracts a modest salary.
  • Watch a short movie about the central role played by research in our undergraduate and postgraduate programmes.
  • This degree programme is accredited by the Royal Society of Biology.
