Program Overview

The Department of Psychology has approximately 30 faculty members and 60 graduate students. Faculty have active research programs in many areas of psychology, many of which rely on volunteers from the community.
Psychology is also part of the interdisciplinary Cognitive and Behavioural Ecology (CABE) program, which offers both the M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees. Interested students should apply directly to the CABE program.
PsyD – The goal of the PsyD program is to train students to become professional clinical psychologists and as such, the program emphasizes acquisition of research knowledge and skills in the solution of applied problems. The curriculum focuses on development of seven competencies: relationships, assessment and diagnosis, intervention, research, consultation, supervision, and ethics and standards. A particular emphasis is placed on issues related to rural practice and multidisciplinary teamwork. In addition to a program of required coursework, successful completion of the PsyD program will also involve fulfilment of the requisite supervised practica experiences, passing a comprehensive examination, producing an independent research thesis, and completing an approved clinical internship.for more information.

English Test Requirements

Students will only be admitted to the program on a full-time basis. Applicants are required to have an Honours Bachelor’s degree in Psychology including an honours thesis. Students who have also completed a Master’s degree in psychology are preferred.
The Admissions Committee will review applications based on:
- Background, interests, research, work and volunteer experience
- competitiveness of transcripts
- Graduate Record Examination scores (the verbal, quantitative & analytic sections of the General test are required; Psychology
- GRE score is not required)
- A personal statement of interest and writing sample
- A personal interview
- Match with a faculty dissertation supervisor
- Three letters of reference

Scholarships

We offer entry scholarships of $6,500 CAD. Please note the following criteria:

If the student has completed more than 30 credits at the post-secondary level, they will not be eligible for entry scholarships.
If the student has completed fewer than 30 post-secondary credits, they do not need to apply for entry scholarships, as any student who applies to study with us is automatically evaluated for eligibility.
Although consideration is automatic, receipt of entry scholarships is highly competitive (typically, we would expect a minimum of 90% across all of a student's admission subjects though this does not guarantee scholarship status).
Preference is given to students whose applications are submitted by March 1 for the Fall semester
Scholarship funding for the Winter and Spring intakes is extremely limited, so entry scholarships usually only go to those who apply for the Fall semester (though some scholarships may be granted in Winter if funding is available).
Entry scholarships apply to the student's first year only and are non-renewable
