Program Overview

The importance of activation professionals will continue to grow as the Canadian baby boomer population ages. The only one of its kind in Ontario, this graduate certificate program provides a terrific complement to a variety of healthcare disciplines, including nursing and fitness, and will provide you with the specialized training you need to care for and support seniors. Training in our unique living classroom environment, you will learn to deliver meaningful, holistic and age-appropriate therapeutic activity programs designed to enhance and maintain the overall quality of life of older persons. This program provides a gerontology complement to previous education and current careers in nursing, fitness and health promotion, occupational therapy, recreation therapy, social services, developmental services worker and personal support worker fields.

Activation coordination in gerontology is a rapidly growing field driven by the increasing number of aging baby boomers in Canada. Although relatively new, it has prompted a demand for individuals with unique skills to provide care and support to our aging population. You will gain training, skills and specialized knowledge in the field of aging and long-term care.
The primary goal of activation professionals is to design and deliver meaningful therapeutic activity programs that enhance the quality of life of older persons. You will learn to apply a holistic activation approach in programming of care and services, which incorporates knowledge of the various physical, mental and social effects of the normal aging process, which is designed to maintain overall wellness.

You will focus on:
