Electrical engineers develop technologies, devices, sensors and specialized computer codes that make aircraft navigation, automotive control, environmental sensing, wireless communication, medical imaging, telehealth, military communication, weather prediction, smart grid operation and many other applications possible. Through classroom instruction, simulations, hands-on lab courses and projects, EE students at South Carolina gain knowledge in circuits, semiconductor devices, electronics, signal processing, control, electromagnetics and other advanced EE concepts that prepares them to address the challenges our nation faces today and tomorrow.
As an electrical engineering major, you will learn to apply principles from mathematics, physics, computing and other sciences to design, build and test the physical building blocks and specialized computer programs for next-generation electronic and wireless devices, sensors, control elements, and systems and networks that will benefit and transform our society. Your studies will culminate in a capstone design experience, where you will work on a project to develop a real system that can address a real societal need.
Opportunities to participate in the research labs of your professors will allow you to take your knowledge to the next step, e.g., developing cutting-edge technologies for the future, should you wish to pursue that.
Electrical engineering majors will be able to select advanced courses from areas of concentration such as electric energy systems, microelectronics, systems and controls, and wireless communications and RF systems, giving you the ability to choose your future career path. Twelve research labs, a state-of-the-art microfabrication facility and numerous CAD and simulation software are in the EE department if you wish to get engaged in research projects with faculty members.
