Throughout time, music has both reflected and driven philosophies, social, political and cultural movements. Those who study and practice music engage in these rich contexts, which continue to define and shape our world.
Are you interested in teaching music? Our program offers low student-teacher ratios and one-on-one instruction in applied studies that provide the personalized mentoring and guidance needed to achieve professional success. The Dr. Grier Williams School of Music was established in 2020 after receiving the largest cash gift in the history of the University of West Florida. Students in the school of music and members of the Argo Athletic Band now benefit from an endowed scholarship fund in excess of $7 million. This transformative gift has created a new landscape of opportunity for our school, leading to unprecedented growth and innovation across our music curriculum.
What You Will Learn
The Dr. Grier Williams School of Music faculty specialize in a wide array of research, scholarly, and creative activities. These areas include instrumental and vocal performance, conducting, chamber music, jazz studies, opera studies, and K-12 music education methods and pedagogy.
You will gain skills in solo and ensemble performing, instrumental music methods, conducting, classroom management, music literature, music history, and vocal and piano pedagogy.
The University of West Florida is an accredited institutional member of the National Association of Schools of Music (NASM), and has been accredited by NASM since 1971. UWF is also an All-Steinway school. You will have access to three multi-use performing spaces in the Center for Fine and Performing Arts, and a wide variety of free arts and cultural events will support and complement the work you do in the classroom.
