Bachelor of Science in Computer Science and Engineering (STEM)

Program Overview

Artificial intelligence, cyber security — these are hot fields today. (See Bill Gates’ essay about the three careers he’d pursue if he went to college today.) And they’re just the kinds of topics you’ll study in UToledo’s computer science and engineering program.

Our students get comprehensive, well-rounded educations in the fundamental theory and application of computer science and engineering. They explore how modern computer science interacts with new technologies. UToledo’s CSE majors learn to design, construct, operate and maintain computer hardware and software.

Highlights

  • Accredited program. UToledo’s renowned College of Engineering is one of the best in the country. Its computer science and engineering program is one of just eight ABET-accredited CSE programs in the country — and the first CSE program to earn accreditation.
  • Mandatory co-ops. We’re one of the few engineering programs in the U.S. to require three semesters of co-op experience. This real-world, paid experience makes our graduates more likely to get hired.
  • Real-world experiences. Seniors design a solution or prototype for a real client. They also expand their horizons through leadership positions in student organizations, and entrepreneurship and service opportunities.
  • Entrepreneurship focus. Incoming freshmen can participate in Freshmen Experience Entrepreneurial Discipline (FEED). Young engineers in FEED learn how to take design projects and ideas of their own to market. Students also can get involved in UToledo’s business incubators, and help CSE startups grow their companies.
  • UToledo’s Industrial Partnerships Program. The Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science builds relationships with industry through activities such as joint research projects, symposia and short courses. Students get ample opportunity to interact with and learn from industry professionals.
  • Unique partnership with Lorain County Community College. Students who want a more affordable option and who can’t get to UToledo’s Main Campus can earn their degrees at LCCC. Three CSE program faculty members and a program director reside at Lorain. Some classes are delivered through interactive video straight from UToledo’s Main Campus.
  • State-of-the-art labs. Students have 24-hour, exclusive access to seven engineering computer labs, including a virtual reality lab and a digital logic lab.
