Bachelor of Arts in Game Design with Specialisation in eSports Studies (Internship/Semester abroad)

Program Overview

Computer, video, and mobile games are the medium of the future. Already today, more than 40 percent of Germans profess their love for them, with 90 percent of those people playing them multiple times a week. Games mean entertainment and business, yet they also reflect personal expression and global perspectives – and most of all, they’re a lot of fun. As a game designer, you’ll create innovative game mechanics and shape game narratives. With your expertise, you’ll be involved in all stages of development: from the first idea through to the technical and creative conceptual design and finally the design of spaces and characters.

At the University of Europe for Applied Sciences (UE), you’ll have the unique opportunity to put together your own individual combination of game design, development and art, which means that you’ll get familiar with the individual disciplines as well as their mutual influences.

In the Game Design programme, your studies will focus on the development and creation of innovative and experimental games. As a student, you’ll receive an overview of the business, culture, and markets surrounding computer games, from AAA to indie games and experimental formats.

Career options for Game Designer
This programme gives students a high degree of autonomy so that they can work in developer studios while developing games themselves. Typical areas would be (e.g.) game-, system-, level-, or narrative designer, game writer or artist, environmental artist, character artist, 3D modeller or texture artist.

You’ll have classes in the areas of game design, game art and game programming, as well as their interplay with each other. From the first semester on, you’ll learn how to master the development process in teams on a project basis. To round out the development of your own games and prototypes, you’ll learn about the theoretical aspects of gaming as a medium, receive an overview of the financial perspectives and get insight into the industry at the national and international levels. In interdisciplinary seminars, workshops, and study trips, you’ll expand your horizons.

Specialisation: eSports Studies
In 2018, the European eSports market has generated revenues of about 240 million Euro. By 2023, an annual increase of 23 percent to EUR 670 million is expected (Deloitte 2019, study on the European eSports market). This economic growth will turn the industry into a real job engine, as there is an increasing demand for trained specialists.

With the specialization “eSports Studies”, you will receive additional training tailored to future jobs in the eSports sector.
