Biomedical science helps society through applying new scientific knowledge to medicine and healthcare. In this degree, you will gain an understanding of health and the methods for diagnosing and treating disease.
If you study this degree on the Gold Coast campus, you'll have a health focus. If you wish to study at the South Brisbane campus (Nathan), you'll have a science focus and need to apply for the Bachelor of Biomedical Science (1031).
In your first year, you will be introduced to the basic sciences underpinning biomedical science. In your second and third years, you will explore more advanced aspects of the biomedical and clinical sciences, including genetics, biochemistry, cell biology, anatomy, physiology, immunology, microbiology, infectious disease, pharmacology and neuroscience.
You will learn through laboratory-based training in the biomedical sciences in cutting-edge facilities, with simulated teaching environments and virtual reality technology.
In addition to learning about the methods for researching, diagnosing and treating disease, you'll learn how humans work at every level, from our cells to the whole of our bodies. If you intend to apply for the Doctor of Medicine (5099), this degree provides excellent foundational knowledge to support your application, as well as a solid foundation for a career in biomedical research.
You'll develop knowledge and skills in clinical and biological sciences, and understand how they can be applied to medicine, biomedical research and other healthcare professions. This degree also provides opportunities for you to articulate into Masters degrees in health professions.

You'll be prepared for work as a biomedical scientist, healthcare technician and biomedical sales representative in hospitals, health departments, medical research institutes, university and government research organisations, and in the pharmaceutical, diagnostic, biotechnology and other health-related industries.
As a graduate, you may also choose to pursue further study. You will be well-placed with excellent foundational knowledge to apply for our graduate entry medical degree, the Doctor of Medicine (5099) or may choose to continue with postgraduate research or coursework study.
The Gold Coast Student Grants program offers a $1,000 grant to help new international students settle into their new life on the Gold Coast. This grant can be used for textbooks, accommodation, or everyday expenses, easing the financial pressure of starting their journey in Australia.

Students who have completed their studies in Australia can apply for a Post Study Work Permit or a Temporary Graduate Visa (subclass 485) to continue working in Australia post the completion of their study programs. As an international student, one can apply for the visa but not later than six months after completing your course. But to be eligible, you must meet the Australian Study Requirements, which include a minimum of 16 months of stay in Australia and a completing 92 weeks of a course registered on the Commonwealth Register of Institutions and Courses for Overseas Students (CRICOS).
