Master of Arts in Global Black Studies, Decolonisation and Social Justice

Program Overview

On our MA Global Black Studies course, we will situate Black studies, culture, and identity in a global context.  The master’s degree aims to unite global perspectives, through course modules you will investigate the underlying historical, cultural, and contemporary patterns of social change. We will look at social change in broad terms but also through specific case studies.

Throughout your studies you will have the chance to learn more about particular social groups and their interventions and contributions in global regions and local communities, such as:

  • The legacy of African Chattel Enslavement
  • The African and Caribbean diaspora
  • The rise of indentured workers.
  • The Windrush generations
  • Black social activism.

The MA degree will also consider contemporary debates such as:

Black Lives Matter (BLM)

  • Issues in education
  • White privilege
  • Policing
  • The social justice system.

The course will also engage with a range of positive contributions made by the black diaspora in literature, music, film, theatre and the arts, science, business, grassroots activism, and campaigns for social justice.
