Program Overview

The department provides programs of study leading to the degree of Master of Arts in several areas of classical studies that include Greek and Roman art and archaeology, Greek and Roman history and historiography, and Greek and Latin languages and literatures. The department attempts, within the range of expertise of its personnel, to tailor the M.A. program to the particular interests and needs of the individual student.

Courses include:-

  • Greek and Roman art history and archaeology, with particular strengths in Roman North Africa, Greek ceramics and Late Antique sculpture
  • Greek literature, especially lyric and dramatic poetry, philosophical literature and Hellenistic poetry and prose
  • Greek language: history and lexicology
  • Latin literature, especially epic and dramatic poetry
  • Greek and Roman historiography
  • Greek and Roman economic history
  • Greek thought and intellectual history
