Bachelor of Science in Sociology with Quantitative Research Methods

Program Overview

Gain a robust foundation in sociology, complemented by comprehensive training in quantitative research methods. Learn to analyse, interpret and write critically about the complexities of social life. No prior knowledge of statistical analysis is assumed or required.

The first year will introduce you to foundational sociological concepts, theories and methods such as the individual and society, social inequalities and identity, the impact of globalisation, and quantitative and qualitative research methods.

In subsequent years, you will benefit from a wide choice of sociology units linked to staff research interests. You will extend your training in quantitative research to include hands-on experience with real, large-scale survey data, using advanced analytical techniques and professional statistical software.

In your final year, complete a capstone dissertation on a topic of your choice using survey data, supported by close supervision of an academic specialising in quantitative methods.

This course prepares you to address pressing social issues with empirical rigour and analytical precision. Graduate well-prepared for a career in industry and public service, and with a strong base knowledge for postgraduate study.

You will acquire core knowledge in your subject, studying the politics of individual countries and governments and the relationships between nations, communities and individuals. You will become familiar with different views and methods of analysis and learn to apply and evaluate them.

The remaining third of your course will provide interdisciplinary training in quantitative methods. In year one of the quantitative pathways, we cover how numbers and data are used to tell convincing stories in the media and social research.

Your second year offers practical classes in social statistics and applied data analysis, developing your skills in numeracy and analysis. This will enable you to undertake your own individual research project in an area of quantitative social science in your third year.
