Master of City Planning

Program Overview

The Master of City Planning degree is recognized by the Canadian Institute of Planners. Graduates are eligible for full Membership status in this professional institute after two years of relevant professional experience.

Students from Canada and abroad attend this program, bringing with them a multiplicity of backgrounds, including the humanities, the natural, social, and applied sciences and the design disciplines. This diversity fosters a very rich educational experience. With a relatively small incoming class each year, students benefit from close personal interaction with members of the faculty and practitioners.

The program in City Planning seeks to provide a strong general grounding in planning education that is enriched through local institutional and geographic contexts, and that builds upon the strengths of faculty and staff. Graduate students in the program have the opportunity to work with many other faculty and students, as the Department of City Planning operates within the multidisciplinary Faculty of Architecture. The Faculty is a consortium of five programs of study: undergraduate environmental design and graduate professional education in interior design, architecture, city planning and landscape architecture. Within the larger University of Manitoba community, our students have been connected with the departments of anthropology, geography, human ecology, engineering, native studies and other divisions, such at the Natural Resources Institute (NRI).
