Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Canadian Studies

Program Overview

Canadian studies examines Canada's past and present from a political, economic, social and cultural standpoint. The program takes an interdisciplinary approach, allowing students to study Canadian themes from a broad range of disciplinary perspectives and to synthesize these perspectives in specific Canadian studies courses.

Canadian studies offers a multi-dimensional learning experience. For example: courses in sociology examine ethnicity, poverty and inequality. Courses in in history examine Canada's colonial past, making sense of twentieth century Québec nationalism, multiculturalism and regionalism. Labour courses cover Canada's unique approach to industrial relations and worker rights.

Students will gain an in-depth understanding of Canada from a national and international context through topics including language, geography, culture and history.

The honours program offers a rigorous examination of a particular subject area for those who desire a more specialized undergraduate preparation. This is the preferred program for students who wish to continue their education at the graduate level.

Students normally enter the program after first year, although you may be eligible to enter the program later in your undergraduate studies.
