Program Overview

Our BSc Mathematics and Statistics (including foundation year) will be suitable for you if your academic qualifications do not yet meet our entrance requirements for the three-year version of this course and you want a programme that increases your subject knowledge as well as improves your academic skills in order to support your academic performance.

This four-year course includes a foundation year (Year Zero), followed by a further three years of study. During your Year Zero, you study three academic subjects relevant to your chosen course as well as a compulsory academic skills module, with additional English language for non-English speakers.

You are an Essex student from day one, a member of our global community based at the most internationally diverse campus in the UK.

After successful completion of Year Zero in our Essex Pathways Department, you progress to complete your course with our Department of Mathematical Sciences.

Our BSc Statistics is for students who want to understand and analyse data using modern statistical methods. It’s a home for mathematicians who enjoy solving practical problems and who want to make a difference in all sorts of areas. On our course you can study a wide range of topics, such as:

• Statistics, including theory and practical computer-based exercises
• Optimisation, from linear to integer programming
• Applied mathematics, such as vector calculus and differential equations
• You’ll also have the chance to engage with our employability activities.

You develop your mathematical and statistical skills with a balance between solid theory and practical application in problems arising from finance, medicine, biology, economics and other fields of modern research.

You therefore can gain an exceptional range of knowledge and skills that are currently in demand in statistically oriented employment; in business, commerce, industry, government service, education and in the wider economy.
