Our combined honours History and International Relations course combines the study of historical events and the impact of these on the society we live in today, whilst exploring the relationships between nations, global politics, and the influence of power in society.
History at Keele is taught by academics who are active researchers and experts across a diverse range of fields (from political, social, economic and cultural history to the history of gender, health, sexuality and religion) and periods (from late-antiquity to the present day). You will develop your knowledge, critical thinking, and analytical skills by studying a range of topics, enabling you to trace the course of change in key areas of human history. You will learn to appreciate the impact of events, forces, and processes on individual societies and the world as a whole.
You will develop an understanding of how to research diverse topics effectively, how to critically interrogate evidence and reflect on pivotal moments in history. This will involve working both independently and as part of a team in order to broaden your knowledge and develop transferable skills that will allow you to interpret information from various sources critically and effectively.
International Relations will encourage you to consider how various factors contribute to the way in which the world works, including the role of government and citizens and how these interact with each other. Through continuous analysis, you will develop a critical approach towards how this might look in the future, with consideration of the risks and challenges in shaping the world.
You will gain a solid understanding of international organisations such as the United Nations and European Union, which will develop your knowledge in global matters. You will learn to interpret theory and text and present your findings and explanations through both written and verbal methods. This course will also equip you with key skills for research and allow you to develop both personally and professionally in becoming an independent thinker, preparing you for a career of your choice.
