By studying literature and writing, you will develop the creativity, the communication skills, the critical thinking and the collaborative spirit that drives success in the 21st century. The close study of the written word provides skills that are valued in every professional field. The graduate program is designed around active student learning through a rigorous program to strengthen your analytical and communication skills to succeed as a scholar, writer, publisher, educator and professional. The program offers an opportunity to work closely with faculty mentors and to pursue individual research interests within two specializations - creative writing or literature. The literature concentration is designed to provide both a breadth of knowledge and an opportunity to explore literary study in areas of particular interest to you. Faculty in the department explore a wide range of research interests in literature, theory, cultural studies, popular culture, print culture and more. You will learn research methods and be prepared for success in fields such as publishing, law, marketing and communications, as well as for the pursuit of a PhD.

Optional Practical Training or OPT is a period during which students, who have completed their degrees in the USA, are permitted to work for one year on a student visa by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). OPT allows students to work for up to 3 years and develop real-world skills to survive in the competitive jobs market.
It is temporary employment for a period of 12-months that is directly related to the major area of study of an F-1 student. Eligible students have the option to apply for OPT employment authorization before completing their academic studies and/or after completing their academic studies.
A student can participate in three types of Optional Practical Training (OPT):
