Diploma in Library and Information Technician

Program Overview

Are you the go-to person when someone needs information? Library and information technicians (LITs) are experts at organizing knowledge and data. They use their superior interpersonal skills to serve customers and help them find the answers to their information questions. If you are resourceful, detail-oriented, and tech-savvy, and if you have a passion for research and an interest in promoting libraries, a career as a library and information technician is right for you.
This program will provide you with the knowledge and skills required to work in a variety of types of libraries, resource centres, cultural and heritage organizations and related industries.
You will learn all aspects of information management from selecting, acquiring and organizing information to providing access to carefully-curated resources.  Through simulations and hands-on activities, you will develop superior customer service, advocacy and marketing skills.  You will also practise engaging clients through programming and instruction.

Students focus on:

  • Analyzing information requests, selecting appropriate sources, developing and conducting information searches, evaluating information and presenting results
  • Selecting and acquiring materials
  • Deriving, editing and/or creating catalogue records
  • Maintaining serials control and circulation systems
  • Creating marketing and promotional materials and organizing events
  • Creating and delivering information literacy, instructional and programming activities with a focus on literacy and STEM-related tools
  • Conducting research, compiling bibliographies and writing reports
  • Developing and implementing systems to manage archival collections and corporate records.
