Bachelor of Arts in Drama / Bachelor of Education in Secondary Route

Program Overview

This Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Education Combined Degrees program consists of 150 units normally taken over five years of full-time study. Coursework within the two Faculties is taken concurrently. Students initially apply for admission to the Faculty of Arts and are considered to be registered in that Faculty for the first three years of the program. All qualified Year 3 Bachelor of Arts (Drama)/Bachelor of Education students will be promoted to Year 4 in the Faculty of Education provided a minimum GPA of a 2.3 has been achieved and a minimum of 90 units applicable to this program has been successfully completed. Please note that the Combined BA/BEd program requires a minimum of 9 units of 400-level DRAMA or above. A recommended program structure is outlined below. Since this program is very tightly constructed, and depends on careful sequencing of DRAMA courses throughout the five years of the program, we strongly encourage students to consult with program advisors prior to making any variations to this program.

Bachelor of Arts in Drama

The BA Drama program here at UAlberta has a strong focus on performer-created theatre. That means we emphasize the creation of theatre, as well as the interpretation of theatre. It's the difference between performing a script that was written by someone else or performing a work that was born out of one's own creative process.

Bachelor of Education

The Bachelor of Education Secondary program is a specialized program in which students will select a teachable major and minor. The program prepares students to instruct in these two subject areas in Grades 7-12. It consists of 120 units of course weight (*120) overall and a minimum of 14 weeks of student teaching.

Why study this program?
The Drama major, taken as part of the BA/BEd combined degree, explores both theory and practice within a well-rounded liberal arts setting. You will be exposed to every aspect of the theatrical process, including acting, clowning, and improvisation; playwriting, directing, production, and design; and critical analysis and theory. You’ll also have the opportunity to pursue your own independent project in research and/or practice.
