Program Overview

The objectives of the program are twofold: (i) to develop highly qualified professionals capable of adapting with ease to the dynamic field of computing; and (ii) to prepare students interested in pursuing doctoral studies in computer science or related fields. The program provides a strong base in the fundamental areas of computer science, such as algorithms, operating systems and programming languages. In addition, the program offers a large number of electives in important areas such as networking, security, web and mobile application development, and parallel and distributed computing. Students interested in applied computer science may select a concentration either in Web Engineering or Networking and Security. Students may also select a focus in their own particular area of interest by choosing elective courses and/or up to two independent study/research courses under the close supervision of a faculty expert. Faculty fields of expertise include computer vision, artificial intelligence, data mining, software engineering, security, cognitive neuroscience, computational algebra, and logic and programming languages.

Scholarship Information:

MS in Computer Science direct entry students receive the total of $15,000 scholarship, awarded at $5,000 per semester provided they meet the following deadlines:

Application Deadline: May 15, 2025
Confirmation Deadline: June 15, 2025
SEVIS Payment Deadline: July 1, 2025

Applications will continue to still be accepted even after the above application deadline and can be confirmed beyond the confirmation deadline, however, admitted students will no longer be awarded a scholarship post these deadlines. Students who defer their admission after Fall 2025 will not carry the scholarship award.

Hofstra University is pleased to announce the extension of scholarship award of $15,000 for Direct Entry MS in Computer Science students enrolling in the Spring 2025 or Fall 2025 semesters.

Some important details about the MS in Computer Science at Hofstra University:

Students admitted directly can complete the 30-credit MS in Computer Science in 3 semesters (1.5 years). As a STEM-designated degree, graduates from this program will have the option to work full-time during their OPT for up to 3 years
The $15,000 scholarship reduces the total estimated cost of tuition for the entire master’s degree to $36,900. Scholarship recipients who participate in Hofstra’s Computer Science Co-op program could potentially reduce their estimated total cost of tuition to $0 - $16,900 by recovering tuition costs before graduating.
The Co-op program offers students the opportunity to gain paid, full-time work experience (CPT) for a period of 6 to 8 months during their studies, earning an estimated $20,000 - $40,000, without affecting total OPT time.

Work Permit

PGWP

Optional Practical Training or OPT is a period during which students, who have completed their degrees in the USA, are permitted to work for one year on a student visa by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). OPT allows students to work for up to 3 years and develop real-world skills to survive in the competitive jobs market.

It is temporary employment for a period of 12-months that is directly related to the major area of study of an F-1 student. Eligible students have the option to apply for OPT employment authorization before completing their academic studies and/or after completing their academic studies.

A student can participate in three types of Optional Practical Training (OPT):

Pre-Completion OPT: This is temporary employment provided to F-1 students before completion of their course of study.
Post-Completion OPT: This is temporary employment available to F-1 students after completing their course of study.
24 Month STEM Extension: Students enrolled in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) courses can a 24-month extension after their initial Post-Completion OPT authorization.
