Program Overview

Saint Louis University's College for Public Health and Social Justice is committed to social justice and the Jesuit mission as the only accredited Catholic, Jesuit school of public health in the nation. Students who graduate from SLU's College for Public Health and Social Justice pass the Certified Public Health exam at significantly higher rates than the national average. Over the past few years, more than 90% of students passed the exam on the first try, as compared to the national average of 75 to 85% annually.

WHy STUDY PUBLIC HEALTH AT SLU? SLU’s Master of Public Health trains students to be competent in the five core areas of public health: behavioral science, biostatistics, epidemiology, environmental health, and health administration and policy. Students in our program gain experience through applied learning opportunities with community partners

STUDENTS WILL CHOOSE ONE OR TWO OF EIGHT CONCENTRATION AREAS:

  • BEHAVIORAL SCIENCE and HEALTH EDUCATION
    • Learn to design and evaluate interventions that promote healthy lifestyles and prevent illness and injuries.
  • BIOSECURITY and DISASTER PREPAREDNESS*
    • Develop preventive measures to reduce the risk of transmission of infectious diseases, living modified organisms and other potentially harmful biological agents.
  • BIOSTATISTICS
    • Learn to apply statistical theory and mathematical principles to research in public health, medicine, pharmacology, biology, environmental science and other related fields aimed at determining the causes of disease and injuries and to identifying critical trends within communities.
  • EPIDEMIOLOGY
    • Learn to investigate and control disease distributions and the determinants of disease in human populations.
  • GLOBAL HEALTH
    • Learn to research, understand and address worldwide health needs that transcend national boundaries, focusing especially on the needs of people living in developing countries and resource-poor immigrant communities here in the United States.
  • HEALTH MANAGEMENT and POLICY
    • Learn to create solutions that address key public health and health care system management challenges.
  • MATERNAL and CHILD HEALTH
    • Learn to investigate and address the complex public health problems unique to women, children and their families.
  • PUBLIC HEALTH PRACTICE
    • For professionals currently working in public health or experienced clinicians, learn to enhance skills in public health practice and develop, implement, and evaluate effective public health initiatives.
