Bachelor of Science in Computer Science (Co-op Optional)

Program Overview

The BScCS is a four-year degree program providing students with a solid foundation in core areas of computing recognized by the Canadian Information Processing Society. The program prepares students for a wide variety of careers in traditional and emerging fields in computing. Alongside core courses a targeted range of elective courses are offered through which students have the opportunity to deepen their knowledge in specific areas of computing or in complementary disciplines.

Students may choose to specialize in one of the following disciplines: software engineering, or computer networking.

Why Computer Science at UNB?

Our department has a low student to faculty ratio, allowing students greater interaction with their professors. Student alumni of the department have regularly identified this as a key benefit that contributes to their success. In addition to our specializations we have expertise in newer areas of computing such as web sciences, data analytics, and data mining.

Hands-on learning:

We offer students the opportunity of job placement in local companies through the co-op office in the Faculty of Business. Co-op education provides academic credit for structured job experience. Students benefit from exposure to a workplace environment and immersion in technical teams in industry.

Throughout their studies, students are also required to complete course projects, individually or in teams, using the programming skills they acquire in the early years. Upper level courses can include significant project work, in some cases upto 70% of a course grade. Selected students can compete in a regional programming competition held annually at one of the Maritime universities.

Skills you will acquire:

  • Writing high-quality and efficient software programs
  • Problem solving
  • Software design
  • Project management
  • Technical writing and communication
