The Master of Arts (MA) degree in theatre is designed for students seeking preparation for a Ph.D. or MFA degree, as well as for experienced and certified secondary-school- or community-college-level teachers who wish to complete intensive academic coursework in theatre.
Students take core courses in performance theory, dramaturgy and performance analysis, literature and/or history and specialize in a research area of their choosing – this research can be in the form of a tradition written thesis, or a combination of performance practice as research and a shorter written thesis. Students also have the opportunity to choose from a wide range of courses offered within the School of Theatre and Dance, the college of Visual and performance arts or across the university, chosen in consultation with their academic supervisor. Examples of these include courses in film, creative writing, stage design and technology, education, etc. Students thereby can design their masters in theatre arts program to meet their research and learning needs, and their experience.
Students may be accepted every three years into the two-year program; there is no set class size. Applications are not currently being accepted; the next application cycle is TBD. Please visit the UM Grad School website for details on how to initiate the application process and to see an updated application schedule when it becomes available.
