Our environmental masters track takes advantage of the department’s expertise in wilderness issues, Thoreau, critical animal studies, philosophy of ecology, literature and ethics, synthetic biology, gender and environment, climate ethics, and the Anthropocene. In addition to philosophy faculty in these areas, many faculty with environmental expertise outside the department make UM an exciting place to study environmental philosophy.
A Master's degree in environmental philosophy can stand on its own or provide valuable preparation for a PhD in philosophy, law school, public policy work, the non-profit sector, or environmental writing, analysis, and consulting. We offer an intellectual and cultural environment for this work that is unique and cutting-edge.
We have been awarded a ‘distinctive program designation’ from the Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education. This means that we offer something recognized as important across our region. A graduate student in our environmental philosophy emphasis who is a resident of a Western state can enroll at 150% of Montana’s in-state tuition rates. The Western states covered by this agreement include Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI), Hawaii, Idaho, Nevada, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oregon, South Dakota, Utah, Washington, and Wyoming.
