Learn how to apply engineering design and analysis techniques to problems at the interface between physical and biological systems and engineer solutions to help people live better lives in the biomedical engineering bachelor’s program at Stevens.
Biomedical engineers design devices and instruments that improve the quality of life for medical patients and aid physicians in medical diagnosis and treatment of disease, such as total implantable hearts, pacemakers and defibrillators, imaging devices, prostheses, replacement parts, portable EKG machines, and heart-lung machines.
The biomedical engineering program at Stevens exposes students to a broad-based, multidisciplinary curriculum that not only trains them in the fundamentals of math, science and engineering, but also in biology, physiology and the interactions of engineering materials with biological surfaces.
The program has a very strong design component including a capstone senior design project — a team effort to design, build and test a medical device — and extensive laboratory experience in cutting-edge research with faculty in areas like biorobotics, brain-machine interface, spinal implants, lung mechanics, emergency medicine (with HUMC) and tissue engineering.

Career Opportunities
Stevens awards several merit scholarships every year to our most outstanding students. You are automatically considered for Stevens merit scholarships when you are admitted; no additional application is needed.
Merit scholarships range between $5,000 and full tuition (scholarships may not exceed the cost of tuition). If you receive a Stevens merit scholarship, it may be renewed every year, for a total of eight full-time undergraduate semesters, as long as you meet all of the renewal requirements.
Global Scholarship
Stevens grants a limited number of Global Scholarships each year to international students for exceptional academic merit. International students who wish to be considered for institutional scholarship must submit the CSS PROFILE on the College Board website. We will notify you if you receive a Global Scholarship. This scholarship is renewable for eight full-time undergraduate semesters as long as you meet satisfactory academic progress.
Optional Practical Training or OPT is a period during which students, who have completed their degrees in the USA, are permitted to work for one year on a student visa by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). OPT allows students to work for up to 3 years and develop real-world skills to survive in the competitive jobs market.
It is temporary employment for a period of 12-months that is directly related to the major area of study of an F-1 student. Eligible students have the option to apply for OPT employment authorization before completing their academic studies and/or after completing their academic studies.
A student can participate in three types of Optional Practical Training (OPT):
